Fifty years ago today, the new Saranac Lake High School opened its doors for the first time! The headline in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that day read, "New School: Beauty, Confusion!" What are your favorite memories of school days over the last 50 years?

Happy Thanksgiving from the staff and Board of Directors here at Historic Saranac Lake, the Saranac Laboratory Museum, and the Cure Porch on Wheels.
We're thankful for all of your support throughout the year! Our work would not be possible without the volunteers, donors, and fans who help us preserve and share area history and architecture to build a stronger community. We hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! In this photograph, Dr. Edward R. Baldwin prepares to carve a turkey, probably for Thanksgiving, in the Baldwin family home on Church Street in Saranac Lake. We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a Smart Growth grant from the State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation to support site plan design for our expanded museum campus in downtown Saranac Lake. This spring we acquired the Trudeau Building at 118 Main Street for expansion of our existing museum at the adjacent Saranac Laboratory. Careful site plan design will create a seamless visitor experience by integrating the two buildings and the various exhibit spaces. See the complete press release to learn more! It's Tuberculosis Thursday, so we're wishing you a Happy Halloween from Trudeau Sanatorium and all of us at Historic Saranac Lake! It looks like these patients were celebrating in 1950 with a spooky performance and some frightful jack o'lanterns. Have a safe and fun Halloween, and be sure to pay us a visit during downtown trick or treating today!
[Historic Saranac Lake Collection, TCR 240. Courtesy of the Eckmann Family] Last week we hosted the annual Homeschool History Day with local homeschool families! Each student picked an important figure from history to dress up as and present about. We had visits from Martha Washington, C.S. Lewis, vikings, and even a tiger (among many others!)! This year, we also paid a visit to Pine Ridge Cemetery, where we learned about some of the important people buried there. Thanks for joining us again! This weekend we hosted some special guests for a great presentation and house tour! CJ Moore and Nancy Broermann published the book, "Maria Longworth Storer: from Music and Art to Popes and Presidents" this spring, and we were happy to have them present about their research! They discovered that the Longworth-Nichols-Storer family had many connections to TB, Saranac Lake, and Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau while researching the life of the fascinating woman who founded Rookwood Pottery. After their presentation, we toured Highland Manor on Park Avenue, which was the home of Maria's son, Dr. Joseph Nichols. Dr. Nichols came to Saranac Lake to work for Dr. Trudeau after curing from TB.
On Sunday, our Museum Administrator Chessie took CJ and Nancy to visit the grave of Dr. Nichols and his wife, Mary, and to see the WWI Memorial where Mary is listed for her work overseas. A great time was had by all, and everyone learned a lot, so we want to thank CJ and Nancy for sharing their research with us, as well as Kathy and Ralph Bonavist for their hospitality. We will soon have copies of "Maria Longworth Storer" for sale in our gift shop!
